A landmark exploration of tattoo culture spanning four centuries, this 45th edition compiles Henk Schiffmacher's legendary private collection—one of the world's most comprehensive archives of tattooing history. Blending scholarly research with personal narrative, the book weaves together the lives of pioneering tattoo artists, their struggles, triumphs, and artistic innovations. Discover hundreds of rare artifacts and never-before-published materials: vintage flash sheets from Western tattooing's founding figures, indigenous Māori and Pacific Islander traditions, ancient Asian techniques, and original illustrations by Schiffmacher himself.
Each chapter unveils lithographs, etchings, instruments, and designs that document tattooing's evolution from underground practice to respected art form. Beyond the images lies Schiffmacher's intimate account—forty years of collecting passion, daring expeditions, and encounters with the visionaries who shaped modern tattooing. This is both a definitive historical record and a personal testament to one artist's devotion to preserving and celebrating tattoo culture worldwide.
